Regarding whether you need to straighten your hair before stitch braids, the answer is it depends. You can straighten the hair before getting this type of braids. However, you’ll need to apply hair gel like Jam or Edge Control to the roots. Not only will this make the natural hair slick, but also make it easier to work with.
Longevity Of These Braids
How long this braid style last depends on a few factors. For instance, how well you care for them and the texture of your hair. If you have type 3 hair that experiences less shrinkage, your braids may last 7-8 weeks.
On the other hand, type 4 hair that experiences more shrinkage, they should last 4-6 weeks. But remember, how well you take care of your braids also determines how long they last.
How To Care For Stitch Braids
Because wearing braids are low maintenance, don’t forget to care for both your hair and the braid style. For this reason, we recommend cleansing your scalp with shampoo once to every two weeks. You can do this by:
- Shampooing. Dip a clean cloth or cotton ball into the shampoo and gently rub it through your scalp. When you’re done, clean off the shampoo by dipping a clean cotton ball/cloth in clean warm water. Then, gently rub it on your scalp until all the shampoo has been been removed. Of course, you’ll probably need more than one cotton ball for this step to make sure remaining shampoo is gone.
- Conditioning. To condition your hair, apply the same technique as with the shampoo process. But this time, focus on the hair roots.
- Drying. Let your hair dry and apply lightweight oil onto your scalp and hair roots.
- Moisturizing. You can also use a moisturizer on the braids. This will give your natural hair shaft care.
- Wear a satin bonnet. Lastly, make sure you wear a silk scarf or satin bonnet at night.
